Golf Swing Plane: Let’s get set up!

So were determined to get that golf swing plane sorted, and we’ve began to see the importance of balance and the set up, in getting that perfect golf swing plane, without the need for golf swing aids. So let’s continue our golf swing teaching and look more closely at the golf swing set up.

Is your alignment right?

In the ideal golf swing setup your feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes should be positioned parallel to the target. The best way to imagine this is to imagine a railroad track. The body is on the inside rail and the ball is on the outside rail.

Your Feet!

Your feet should be shoulder width apart for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. Your back foot should be square or 90 degrees to the target, whist your target foot should be pointing about 30 degrees towards your target.

Where is your ball?

To get the right golf set up and improve your golf swing plane, the ball placement is essential. In your short irons the ball placement must be central i.e. centered between the legs. In your middle irons the ball should be one ball to the left of center (In a right handed player). For your fairway woods and long irons the correct ball position is two balls left of center (Right handed player) whilst for your driver you are looking at having the ball positioned three balls left of center.

More balance.

You’ve sorted your alignment, have your feet the right way and have placed your ball correctly; we now need to get that balance perfect for that improved golf swing plane. Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet. With short irons, your weight should be 60-percent on the left foot (right-handers). For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the right foot (right-handers). Pretty simple wont you say?

It’s all about the posture!

Good posture is essential so …Your knees should be slightly bent and directly over the balls of your feet for balance. The back knee should be cocked slightly inward towards the target. Your body should bend at the hips, so that your buttocks will protrude slightly. The spine should be bent towards the ball from the hips at approximately a 45-degree angle to the shaft of the club. Your back should be in a straight line with no bending in the middle of the spine. With that said your spine should tilt to the side, slightly away from the target. The target side hip and shoulder should be slightly higher than the back hip and shoulder. Your head should be tipped at the same angle as the spine. With that done we need to look at the next step.

Arms and hands….where should they go?

Your hands should hang just off the inside of your target side thigh. The hands-to-body distance varies depending on the club you are hitting. A good rule of thumb is to have your hands at a palm’s width from the body for short and middle irons and at a palm’s length   for long irons and woods.

So there you have it…some crucial information on setting up your golf swing. Im sure you’re thinking….wow that’s a lot of effort to get the golf swing plane perfect? Yes it is but once you get it done it becomes second nature and it definitely is worth it. I’ve tried to simplify the golf swing plane setup as best as I can, if your looking for a better explanation I recommend you check out this guide which will definitely do a better job than me. Golf Swing Plane: Everything setup?

Any golfer looking to improve their golf swing plane has to go back to basics to improve their score. In my last post we looked at the importance of good balance whilst performing your golf swing. Today we will be focusing on another fundamental issue of your Golf Swing Plane: The setup.

Are you setting up ok?

How well are you swinging? Are your shots erratic? Well if you’ve addressed your balance and started to improve on that, we might have another key issue which will improve your golf swing almost instantly. The golf swing setup is all too often ignored by amateurs and professionals alike, even though it is a crucial aspect of your game. Get the setup correct and you’ll improve your golf swing within minutes. Even a poor/ mediocre golf swing can be improved if you address you golf swing setup. A good golf swing setup focuses on three objectives.

Maintain your balance.

In my last post (Golf swing plane: Getting it right) we saw the importance of balance in a golf swing. By implementing a good setup, we encourage proper posture and foot placement. This allows you to maintain your balance throughout the swing allowing you to strike the ball consistently and maintain your balance during your swing.

Keep that power.

With the balance sorted and an improved strike rate we need to get that ball further and more accurately. A good golf swing plane helps you create more power and gain greater control of the direction of the shot. The alignment of your body is crucial to obtaining both power and control, and hence gaining that killer golf swing.

Gain the upper hand.

Without a good golf swing set up, a good golf swing is virtually impossible. Those golfers with an excellent setup consistently create more power and greater accuracy in their shots and therefore have the upper hand. Can you afford not to address your setup?

With your golf swing being crucial to your game, it is logical that the golf swing setup is equally as important. Personally I had an awful setup to my swing, meaning pretty awful consistency when it came to accuracy. Once I began to address this issue, my swing improved and although it’s still not perfect, it’s much better and definitely feels easier to perform. In my next post I’ll look at the golf swing setup on a step by step basis, so we can improve our golf swing plane.

If you are far too impatient and cant wait for that post. Check out this guide. It makes excellent reading and is packed with information which will make a big difference in your game.

Thanks for Reading

Golf Swing Plane: Start Getting it right!

Getting your golf swing plane right is easier than you think. Every golfer’s dream is a perfect golf swing to blow the opposition out of the water every single time. And this dream is not as elusive as it seems. If you have read Golf Swing Plane: 5 tips on improving your golf swing plane, you are part of the way there. Today we are looking at how balance affects the quality of you golf swing plane.

How’s your Balance?

Are your shots flying about erratically? Are you beginning to lose your patience? Well the reason behind this erratic golf swing could be simpler than you think. On of the most common issues in amateur golfers is poor balance, which causes a poor golf swing plane.

So how do I check my balance?

Checking your balance during your golf swing plane couldn’t be any simpler. If you are right handed take out a quarter and place it on the toe of your left shoe (Place on the right hand side shoe if left handed).

What’s the whole point?

We are going to try to keep that quarter on your left toe, throughout the duration of your golf swing plane. After swinging, you’ll take a look to see where the quarter has fallen, and find out why it happens.

Coin has fallen to the outside?

If the coin has fallen on the outside of you foot it means that you have fallen back on your heel on the finish, or you have rolled out too far on the outside of your foot.

Coin fallen on the inside of your foot?

If the coin has found itself on the inside of your foot, it means that you have moved too much weight backwards during your backswing, causing your front foot to roll too much.

Coin fallen on the front of your shoe?

This indicates that you have lifted your front foot off the ground too far, meaning you are placing too much weight on the back foot.

So what is the solution then? And how do I use my balance to improve my golf swing plane?

In order to get the coin to stay on you front foot and improve that golf swing plane, you will need to finish with all of your weight over the arch of your front foot and with your stomach facing toward the target.

If you are determined to gain that killer golf swing plane, you will need to improve you balance during your golf swing plane. In addition I advise you to have a read over my earlier post Golf Swing Plane: 5 tips for beginners and subscribe to my blog for regular updates on posts.

In fact, if you do this, then you will find that you will have a killer golf swing in less than seven days.

Golf – sliding hips in back swing?

This is one of the common mistakes in golf swing from a fellow golfer. Do check yourself on this!!!

As below:

I can’t stop sliding my hips away from the target in my backswing which results in my club be way off plane in my back swing (above my head), starts a reverse pivot and then I need to go over top on downswing which results in shank. I have tried numerous tips to turn instead of slide and I just can’t stop the slide. Does anybody have one swing thought that helps eliminate hip slide on the back swing?

I had a similar issue–the real problem is that your weight is transferring outside your back leg, or as I like to think:

"You are breaking your wall". Think of your back leg as a anchor for your golf swing. Your lower body should be quiet during your swing.

While thinking "don't break my wall" I also think, "turn (my right) your left shoulder under chin" and these two thoughts have helped me drastically. From a 25 to 16 handicap.
